J&B Recycling is a waste recycling company, operating from two recycling facilities in Hartlepool and a waste transfer station in Middlesbrough. The company serves public and private sector organisations throughout the North East, including local authorities, commercial and industrial customers.

In 2014, we made a significant investment into J&B Recycling, a family-run business, based in Hartlepool. Our backing enabled J&B Recycling to expand its facilities for treating commercial and household waste, including purchasing two additional recycling sites, doubling its processing capacity. The business also invested heavily in new equipment (state-of-the-art, automated sorting machines), and adopted new engineering and process optimisation techniques, to drive efficiencies.

Alongside funding, we provided significant scaleup support to the business:

Introducing J&B Recycling to its non-executive chair, Ross Smith, the former-CEO of MDC Technology and Chair of IoT connectivity group CSL Dualcom
Helping to strengthen the company’s management team and board, with the recruitment of finance and operations directors
Boosting its media profile, visibility and reputation, through crucial PR support

J&B Recycling now processes over 160,000 tonnes of recycling each year, and has successfully established itself as one of the UK’s leading materials recovery sites.

After seven years in partnership with BGF, and having grown revenues more than 200% during this time, J&B Recycling was acquired by the UK subsidiary of Spanish firm Urbaser — the third-largest environmental services provider in Europe. The exit generated a strong return on our initial investment.
